I am looking for any information on the family of Joseph MYLNAR, wife Antonia HORJAK (maiden name perhaps SHANTI or CHANTI). He immigrated to America through Ellis Island in 1905, Antonia in 1907. They originally settled in Pueblo, Colorado but moved to Black Diamond Washington in 1910. I would also like to learn more about a town called Rassburg.

BORTNER, Joanne

I am searching for information on the following surnames: PLUT, SKEBE, TURK, and VIDMAR. My G-Ggrandfather was Mathias SKEBE born about 1810 in the Parish of Hinje (Austria, at that time), Slovenia. He married Marija VIDMAR on 23 September 1840. They had 2 children: Maria and Joseph. I believe after that he married Ursula SUSTERSIC on 9 February 1847. They had the following children: Anna, Mathias, Martin, Antonija, Rosa, Mihael, Agnes, Johanna, and Franciscus. Martin SKEBE, my Ggrandfather was born there on 10 November 1852. He married Ana PLUT born 30 May 1862 on 20 February 1884. Their children were: Carolus, Franciscus de Paula, Magdelena, Maria, Filipp, Elizebeta, Antonija, Jozef, and Angela. I am also looking for information on Jozef TURK and Jera BENCINA, my G-Ggrandparents. They are also from Slovenia. Any information on these roots would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

(Roman Catholic, Lutheran)

I am researching my Slovenian great-grandparents, Frank DUH and Theresa BALLEK. Frank DUH (spelled with umlaut - DU¨H) was born November 20, 1889 (according to his tombstone). Conflicting reports place his birthplace in either Szakonyfalu, Hungary or Grad, Slovenia in the province of Prekmurje. He was an xonly-child and was born outside of wedlock. He came to America with his unmarried mother Maria DUH, who was possibly born in 1867. They were Roman Catholic. I would like to find confirmation of Frank's and Maria's birthplaces and any information on possible relations of Maria. Theresa BALLEK born 15 October 1893 at Sulinci, Slovenia had 5 brothers and sisters: Franciska, Joseph, Stefan, Atelka and Szidonia. Her parents were Anna KOROSEC and Joseph BALLEK and they supposedly owned a beet farm. They were Lutherans. I would like to find confirmation of Theresa's birthplace and information on her parents. I would also be interested in corresponding with anyone who has had experience tracing their roots in the Prekmurje province of Slovenia and the Slovene villages in neighboring Hungary.

Webmaster's Note: Civil Registration for births at Grad (1868-1918) is on 12 reels of microfilm at Salt Lake City and thus available to you on a low cost loan basis for viewing at your nearest LDS Family History Center. I think the film you want for 1899 is #1704277, item #2. There are Catholic church records for Szakony Hungary but they stop after 1895. If you are serious enough about your quest to consider hiring an in-country genealogist to check for other information, you might consider Peter Hawlina, A.P.G. of Slovenia who is listed in the FEEFHS Professional Genealogist database

FIDDES, Brian

GESTEL, Bernard J.
P. O. Box 765, Grand Marais, Minnesota 55604-0765

I'm seeking information on the following ancestors: John GESTEL (born 1861, died 3 January 1899) also spelled GESTELJ, GESTAL, GESHEL
Anna GERMAN (born 1862, died January 1930), also spelled GERMAIN, ST. GERMAIN, JERMAIN and ST. JERMAIN.
John PHILLIPS (born 1863, died 27 June 1945), also spelled FILIP and FILEP
Maria PECAUR, (born 8 September 1857, died 26 June 1909), also spelled PECHAVAR Josph VARDIAN (born 6 March 1869, died 12 September 1952) also spelled VARDYAN, VAROLIAN, VERDIAN.

The above ancestors were born in Slovenia or Austria. The exact location is unknown, but some possibilities in Slovenia are Crnomelj, Stari Trg, Ljubjana, Gric, and Sinji Vrk. These ancestors all immigrated to the copper mining region of Michigan, specfically Dollar Bay, and Calumet. Immigration to America for most was between 1883 and 1899. The marriage of John Gestel to Anna German and John Phillips to Marie Pecaur took place in Europe. The marriage of Joseph Vardian to Anna German was in Dollar Bay, Michigan. The men, except for John Gestel (saloon keeper) worked for the copper minimg companies.

Both sets of my grandparents are from Slovenia. One grandfather was a member of the Austrian army. He was a member of Pioneer Battallion No 15, Detached 5th Company, acceptance year 1908, register no. 209, Armanent Station Pettau. I have no idea what any of this means, but I am very interested in learning more. What is an Armanent Station? Is Pettau a city with the station? Is there a significance to the Pioneer Battallion? What is a Detached Company? Can I get a copy of the membership list of register no. 209? Has there ever been a book written on the Pioneer Battallion? Any information you can share will be appreciated.

LOVSIN, of Kozarisce but born in Ribnica, pre-1900. OSABEN / OSHABEN, of Grahovo, pri Cerknica. KOVSCA, of Dolenja Vas, pri Cerknica. Demetrius and Kristjan ZANOSKAR, brothers, born circa 1879, Austria-Hungary, served in the military.

SLOVENIAN ACCENT MARKS RESEARCH PROJECT: How do you handle the Slovenian accent marks in your genealogy program? I will share information with all who write. So far I have found nothing that works with DOS-based genealogy programs. I'm especially interested in a solution for RootsIII.

What we have found: Windows 3.1 users can check out WORDMATE by World Language Resources, 1-800-900-8803 or Fax 310-996-2303, and ACCENT EXPRESS by Accent Software International, 1-800-535-5256 or Fax 1-800-535-5257, however they work only with word processor programs and some spreadsheet programs. Wordmate has a very klutzy installation process that has to be suffered through for each different program, such as AmiPro, Word, Write, etc. Works well thereafter. Windows 95 users don't need any outside software; WIN95 can hot-key accent marks into any Windows program; or you can switch the keyboard to the actual keyboard used on Slovenian typewriters. However this last will take a lot of getting used to, especially for the touch-typist.

POKLAR, John
5739 Finch Lane, Greendale, Wisconsin 53129-1648, USA

I am seeking information on the POKLAR family tree. The family lived in Podgraje, a part of Primorska, Illirske Bistrice. I have collected information on ancestors to Andrej POKLAR and Barbara LIVSAR, who was born in 1837, date of death unknown. Two others before them, Josef POKLAR and Katarina ISKRA are known, but without verification. There are no records of birth date or year of death on either. I believe they were probably born about 1810 because the period 1809-1813 is the time Napoleon and his French army took control of Illyria (Carniola) with their capital in Ljubljana.

I believe a Frenchman may have settled down in Slovenia, married a Slovenian woman and became my ancestor. Perhaps the French name may have been BOUCKIER or POUCLIER, etc. There are probably relatives in France also. There are certainly other Poklars in Slovenia, but it is not a very common name there. Nor is it very common in the USA. I have found a list of Poklars in the USA and contacted several. None believe they are related. There are cousins in Winnipeg, Canada and in Australia. If anyone can help, or has any information that will help me track down my ancestors who lived in the 1800-1915 area of Podgraje, please write me. If anyone has suggestions on searching in France, please write.

I am seeking information about Anna MUHIC and Anthony VIDIC also known as Joseph A. SMITH. Both were born in Carniola / Krain in 1864-65. Anthony VIDIC died as Joseph A. Smith on 20 May 1932 at Leadville, Colorado. Anna MUHIC died as Anna SMITH 24 June 1934 at Durango, Colorado. 1920 U.S. Census records indicate naturalization in 1900, but no record has been found in LaPlata County or Colorado State Archives. Any help in locating marriage and/or immigration information for this couple would be greatly appreciated.

ANTON PALCIC was born May 20, 1864 in Trojica, Slovenia, Europe, and died October 13, 1934 in Denver, Denver County, Co. He married MARY KOZAR Unknown. Anton Palcic, my Grandfather, my dad's father, was born May 20, 1864, in Zales, Sv., Troika, Slovenia. He married Mary Kozar. Mary was born Feb. 2, 1877, in Dobropolje, Dolenjsko, Slovenia. Anton's Passport was issued on April 26, 1893. On the Passport, Anton's last name is spelled Palcic, as we have always spelled it. The only difference is the pronunciation marks over the c's. Anton's occupation was listed as farmer The ruling person of that area at that time was His Majesty Franz Joseph I, Kaiser of Austria, King of Bohemia, and Apostle King of Hungary.

I have no information as to when Mary immigrated to America. I have been told that they did not immigrate to America at the same time. I do not know if they knew each other in Slovenia. I do not know if they were married in Slovenia or America. If they were married before he left for America, I think it would have been a very short time that they had together, because she did not have her first child until 1897 in the United States. After that she had a child about every year, to two years, until the last child. I do know Anton and Mary were together in 1897, living in Leadville, Lake County, Colorado.

On Oct.11, 1897, when Anton was 33 years old, he became a citizen of the United States, in Leadville, Colorado. And on Dec.16, 1897 their first child, John, was born in Leadville. Mary was then 20 years old. They had lived in Leadville, Colorado for five years. On Feb.27, 1902 the family moved from Leadville, Colorado to Aspen, Pitkin County, Colorado. They lived in Aspen, Colorado for five years.

On June 3, 1907 they moved from Aspen, Colorado to Midvale, Salt Lake County, Utah. Anton then was 43 years old, and Mary was 29 years old. They had lived in Milvale, Utah for two years. They moved from Midvale, to Tooele, Tooele County, Utah. On April 4, 1916, when Anton was 51 years old, and Mary was 39 years old, their oldest child, John, died in a mine accident. Of all their twelve children, four died as infants, one died a teenager, and seven lived. All those seven lived normal life spans. These were Mary, Ann, Daniel, Sophie, Dorothy, Arthur, and Clarence. Today, in 1995 only one is still living, and that is Clarence, the last born. The family lived ten years in Tooele, Utah.

On April 12, 1919, when Anton was 55 years old, and Mary was 42 years old, they moved from Tooele, Utah to Denver, Denver County, Colorado. In all these years, from the time they lived in Leadville, Colorado up to the time they moved to Denver, Colorado, Anton was a miner He worked in the metal mines. He also had a natural talent for music, and played the accordion. My dad told me that at times Anton would leave with his accordion, and be gone from home and family, and no one knew when he would come back. He would be gone long enough that Mary would have to take in washing so she could feed her family. His treatment of his wife and children was, I guess, acceptable in those days, but would be considered abusive today.

After Anton came to Denver he worked in the Meat Packing Plants, that were located by the Denver Stockyards. On Jane 13, 1924, when Anton was 60 years old, and Mary was 47 years old, Mary died, in St. Anthony Hospital, in Denver, Colorado. On Oct.13, 1934, when Anton was 70 years old, he was hit by a car on a street corner in Globeville, a section of Denver. He died from this accident. He lived in Denver, Colorado for 25 years. He is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Denver, Colorado. I would love to share information.
