We are looking for any information about Carl ADAMIC (also spelled Karl), his wife, Rosa, and son, Felix, who lived in Sullivan County, New York around 1915. Carl was born in Ribnica, lived in Ljubljana, and arrived in the US with his brothers in 1898. We have lost track of this branch of our family tree

BAEHR, Michael

I am looking for any information on the family "PELJHAN". My mother and her immediate family, which currently reside in Nova Gorica, are PELJHANS. My mother suspects that the name may have originally been "PELIKAN" and that she is descended from Czech or Polish immigrants who moved to Slovenia and adopted a Slovenian name. If you have any information on other PELJHANS or on the history of this name and family, please contact me.

I am trying to find my greatgrandfather's birth date and any other information I can. His name was Joseph UCMAN. He was born approximately 1880 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. His parents were Joseph and Anna UCMAN. I believe that he and his family came to the U.S. in 1903 (port of entry: New York). Their other children were Frank and Anna Mary UCMAN. I believe they all came to the U.S. in 1903, through New York. He marrried Sophia PORADO and resided in Turtle Creek, PA until his death in 1944.

I would like to find out his exact birth date so that my mother can have it placed on his headstone. (We recently discovered that he and his wife have no headstone.) Jospeh and Sophia UCMAN raised my mother. She and I would love to honor their memory by placing a headstone on their grave. I have obtained his death certificate, but it said "unknown" for his birth date and "about 64 yrs". He live most of his adult life in Turtle Creek, PA until his death in 1944. I am new to genealogy research and really don't know where to go from here. I have written Social Security for a copy of his application, but it has been two months and I haven't heard anything. The only other things I know about him are that he was Catholic and I know his social security #. I hope someone out there can help me. Thank You.

CADEZ, Rudi

eMail address: OPSQUEBEC@dfo-mpo.gc.ca

(Roman Catholic)

My name in slovenian is Rudi CADEZ, and the last name has been put in French when my father arrived in France in 1946. His name is Borislav CADEZ, born in Skofja Loka 2 or 12 September 1928. I don't have any information about my grand-father Joze or Josef CADEZ, born 2 September 1901 in Skofja Loka. He was a Royal Navy Officer under the king in the beginning of the century. He never divorced with my Grand-mother, Yva GRIMS, and he had 2 girls with another woman? Nobody in the family wants to talk about him (taboo subject). He was born Catholic. My father had 3 brothers (Bozo, Zvonimir and Vladimir) and a sister (Mira). I know all of them, they live in the region of Ljubljana. My father died in 1997 and never wanted to talk about his father. Now, my mother and me are wondering about his father. My mother (Marica PLAHUTA) is slovenian too, but I know her family history, near Lasko. I wonder if you can find some info on my grand-father genealogy ? Thank you very much, Hvala lepa

CENTA, Ray

eMail address: Recenta@aol.com

My grandfather, Anton CENTA, was born in the Ljubljana area (possibly Rob) 15 December 1887. His parents were Anton CENTA and Marija CIMPERMAN (no further info available). He came to the US in the early 1900s, met and married Judita MARINIC / MARINICH in Cleveland, Ohio 14 November 1910. She was born 19 February 1890 (or 1891) in St. Floriano del Collio (Gorizia) which, I believe, is now Steverjan, Slovenia. Her parents were Joseph MARINIC / MARINICH and Marija MEDVESCEK (no further info available). I am interested in tracing their ancestry beyond that shown. Any help would be very much appreciated.

CHITWOOD, Bill and Julie

Looking for information on the EUEN family of Johnstown PA - found Gerald & Robert EUEN listed for St. Anne's Church in Johnstown (pages 47 & 48 LA). Gerald was married (June 1939) to Margaret STEPHENSON and Robert would have been one of their children.

CROCKER, Howard and Maureen

I am looking for information on my grandparents. My grandfather, Lorenc or Lawrence ZUPAN was born 8 August 1879 at Bled or Radovljica and died 19 January 1922 at Morgantown, W. Va. His father was Sebastian or Bostjan ZUPAN born 19 January 1841 at Stamijoca. His mother was Jera, Jederr, or Gertraud BURJA born 18 February 1843 at Zgorna Lase. My grandmother, Matilda REPPE RAVNICK was born 23 July 1888 at Budapest or Karnervellach, Krajna and died 27 January 1952 at Cleveland, Ohio. Her father was Jozef or Joseph RAVNICK also listed as RAUNICK or ROVNICK, born 19 March 1864 at Bohinska Bela and died 11 August 1940 at Monterey, CA. His parents were Martin RAVNICK and Threasa SMRICK. Her mother was Alojzija or Aloysina REPPE also listed as REPE, born 21 June 1862 and died 21 February 1915 at Pittsburg, PA. Her parents were Martin REPPE and Agnes JOBE.

I am writing a biography of author Gerald KERSH. He had a friend, Father Aloysius Laurent KUHAR, who was quite prominent in the Slovenian community. I found his name on your website. Father KUHAR is mentioned in the church history "The Slovenian Community in Bridgeport, Connecticut"- - by John A. Arnez. I wanted to find out more about Father KUHAR and, if possible, contact any of his friends or family. This is the information I have discovered thus far: Rev. Dr. Aloysius Laurent KUHAR (born 1895, died at New York, 29 October 1958). For a long time before World War 2, Dr. KUHAR was editor of the chief Slovene newspaper, SLOVENEC, in Ljubljana. When Nazi Germany invaded Yugoslavia, he left together with the Government, and was for some time in charge of his Government's information services. He was also Yugoslav Minister to the Polish Government-in-exile. He was a regular broadcaster almost throughout the war in the BBC’'s Slovene services, and his weekly commentaries did much to enhance the prestige of Radio London among Slovene listeners.

After the Government of Yugoslavia was taken over by the Communists, Dr. KUHAR continued to reside at London. He was one of the founding members of the Central and Eastern European Section of the European Movement which was constituted in 1949. From 1950, Dr. KUHAR was active in the Free Europe Committee at New York as an expert on East European affairs. Dr. KUHAR, a Roman Catholic priest, was a man of wide knowledge and culture. Among his many academic distinctions was a doctorate of philosophy awarded by the University of Cambridge for his thesis on the history of language demarcation between Slovenes and Germans. Although unflinching in his convictions Father KUHAR was yet notable for his liberal approach, his genial manner, and great personal charm, which won him many friends among people of widely differing views." (The Times, 7 November 1958).

There are two books by Reverand KUHAR in the British Library: The Conversion Of The Slovenes And The German-Slav Ethnic Boundary In The Eastern Alps (League Of CSA, New York, 1959), and Slovene Medieval History: Selected Studies (Studio Slovenica, New York, 1962). Gerald KERSH's widow (born Florence "Flossie" SOCHIS) talks a little about him, as follows: "I took KERSH to the States. He wasn't a bit well. (This is 1955, after his nervous breakdown.) I built him up as best I could. KERSH had been through such a lot of war-time stuff. What he did, for example, and I only found this out later - he went to Yugoslavia with a fellow who was later a priest - he was a Croatian who was head of the Yugoslav underground - his name of Aloysius KUHAR, and he was the Minister Plenipotentiary to the saintly Pope John in that period. He was a wonderful kind of Jesuit, a real sweetie-pie".

"KERSH was shot during the war. He was beaten up. He had scars in many places. He didn't want to talk about it so he didn't and I therefore don't know these stories. Occasionally, I'd meet somebody who might tell me something. Monsignor KUHAR for instance, knew some of this stuff on account of Yugoslavia and he just said I better not ask, that it wasn't pleasant. They had to rescue him from the Nazis. They were lucky to get him out in pieces and stitch him together."

GIRARD, Maureen

I have a great-grandfather named Henry Clement STERN who was trained to be a Catholic priest, probably in the mid-1800s in Illinois. He was a mysterious figure to his family, turning up only long enough to generate another of his eight progeny and then disappearing again. Finally, his wife got smart and told him not to return. This has left his descendants, obviously, with lots of questions and few clues. A Father Henry STERN has turned up in Slovenian church records. Evidently, many Hutterites became Catholic in the 1700s because of persecution in Europe. If anyone has clues to families with this name, I'd appreciate hearing from them.

GOEKE, Phyllis
eMail address: pngoeke@badger.tds.net

I don't know my paternal grandparent's first name. I have written to cousins in Ohio who are older, hoping that they will know this and also birth date and place of birth. My father returned to Slovenia after my mother died at age 53. Dad married there and lived there for 10 years. I visited four times and got to know many of them. I have also written to my cousins in Slovenia asking for information. I am also researching my mother's family (grandfather Johann SLOVNIK and grandmother Agnes SVETE. Grandfather was born 29 August 1882 and grandmother was born 19 March 1888. They were married at Waukegan, Illinois. I'd appreciate any information concerning my family.

GORSHA, Gary L.
eMail address: gorsha@juno.com

Frank GORSHA (GORS'E) was born at Ribnica, Slovenia 11 September 1886 (or possibly 1884). He emigrated to the U.S. in about 1906 probably through Ellis Island and passed through Cleveland, Ohio. He first settled at Sparta Minnesota; then more permanently at Gilbert, Minnesota at 109 Louisiana Avnue. He married Josephine RUSS, born 5 September 1889 near Novo Mesto, Slovenia. In 1907 she emigrated to help her Uncle Ignatz RUSS who took in boarders. They had 8 sons (Frank, John, Joe, Stan, Tony, Louis, Henry and Raymond), and one daughter (maybe named Stella) who died at an early age. In about 1922 the family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area, specifically to 15901 Raymond Street at Maple Hights, Ohio, where he helped to found the Maple Hights Slovenian Home. In 1931 the family moved back to a farm near Gilbert, Minnesota. Frank died on 18 November 1965 and Josephine died March 1977 in California. I am most interested to learn more about Frank and Josephine's immigration and naturalization dates, ships' names, and points of departure. I would also like to learn more about the daughter (born about 1912) who died young in Gilbert and may be buried in the Catholic cemetary in Gilbert: exact date of birth, name, cause of death, and age at passing or date.

The 1920 census shows that Frank's mother, Mary GORSHA, age 70, emigrated in 1910 to be near her sons in Gilbert, John KNAUS, by a previous marriage, and Frank GORSHA, as well as her daughters, Johanna GORSHA DOLINAR and Angela GORSHA ZADNIK. I am seeking her birthdate, maiden name, husbands' first names, Atlantic crossing information and date of death. She lived to be nearly 100 (died about 1949). The same 1920 census also shows a John GORSHA, age 62, living with the family of his son-in-law, Anton STRUKEL at 111 New York Ave at Gilbert, Minnesota. I am wondering if he was related to Mary and Frank GORSHA, possibly an uncle of Frank, brother to Mary's deceased husband. If so he may have died just a couple years later in about 1922. His estate would have been handled by a Frank INDIHAR, but not settled until about 1932. If related, I am interested in all similar vital statistics for him, too. I am searching these surnames: GORSE, GORSHA, RUSS, KNAUS, DOLINAR, ZADNIK, STRUKEL, INDIHAR

HARDESTY, Charla
eMail address: hardst@pacbell.net

My great grandparents were Jacob SODJA and Barbara OSTRONICH. Jacob immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 and Barbara immigrated in 1890. They lived in Helena, MT where they probably married. They moved to Pueblo, CO, for a while then returned to Butte, Montana. Jacob was a copper miner. Would like to know what town in Slovenia my great grandparents were born. Thank you for any help.

JOHNSTON, Janet C. SITAR
eMail address: JJCJ198@aol.com

I am trying to find information on the names of my grandparents: Franklin SITBAR and Bessie SOUBA. They lived at Hopkins, Minnesota and I think she came from Owatona (sp) Minnesota. We are going to Eastern Europe in September 1998 and I would like to know where know anything. They were both born in this country, as far as I know. I think my grandmother died in about 1950, and my grandfather had died earlier. I would appreciate any information you could give me or how I can find and information. I live near Cleveland, Ohio

KELLER, Jeff

eMail address; JKeller609@aol.com

Simon HRIBAR, his wife Appolonia nee BRETTNER, and their daughter Gertrude (my maternal great-grandmother) arrived in the US 27 June 1874, aboard the ship "America" from Bremen. A son Franz (Frank) also came to the US but not at the same time. On the ship manifest their place of origin was listed as "Krain". They eventually settled less than a mile from St. Anthony with Simon owning 40 acres just south of the village and Franz owning 120 acres just to the east. Interestingly, Franz' land adjoined 80 acres owned (as of 1896) by Math. POGATSCHNICK. Appolonia died in 1895, Simon in 1912, Franz in 1925 and Gertrude in 1927. All but Gertrude are buried in the St. Anthony Cemetery at Albany. On all of the documents I have been able to obtain the place of birth or orgin for all of them has been listed either as "Krain" or "Austria." Since Krain is both a region and a city I have been stymied in my attempts to find a more specific place.

KRAJACICV, Megen
email address: krajacic@earthlink.net

I am searching for information on the KRAJACIC family - my grandfather John KRAJACIC passed away a few years ago and I never had the chance to ask him about his family. My great grandmother was Filipina KRAJACIC and my great grandfather was Otto KRAJACIC - I do not know where they are from - the only thing I know is that they had a farm at Avella Pennsylvania - But I do know they emigrated in the 1800's. That is all I know . I would appreciate any help someone can give me - thank you.

LEHMAN, Sarah
eMail address: lehman99@hotmail.com

I am looking for three names: GAMSEK, PERME, and POTISEK. My father was Conrad GAMSEK, who was born 4 February 1900 near Radece, Slovenia. He emigrated to the U.S. in September 1923. My mother was Marija POTISEK; she was born 16 December 1903 at Trjbolja, Slovenia. She immigrated to the U.S. in December of 1906 with her parents, Anton POTISEK and Frances PERME POTISEK. If anyone can help me find information on these three surnames, eMail me.

LETTIERE, Catherine E.
eMail address: berry4berry@yahoo.com

I am researching information on Stephen KOZJAN, Rose GJURAN and Frank GJURAN. My grandparents emigrated from Yugoslovia approximately l900. They settled at Steelton, Pennsylvania. Grandparents Rose and Frank GJURAN, daughter Katie married Stephen M. KOZJAN (shortened to KOZAN) who were my parents. Any history or other information would be helpful. George and a Margaret living in Colorado ... any relationship to me?

NELSON, Lynda LICAN
eMail address: jklnel@penn.com

I'm trying to do some work on a family tree but have come to a dead stop. My grandfathers parents and brothers and sisters are from the old country. I correspond with one of his sisters, but she is very old and has little information about our family name. Could you please tell me where I can write in Slovenia, preferably by eMail, to get some more information.? I am searching for the name LICAN, and I believe the name is from Ilirska Bistrica, or Prodgraje. Please help me, don't know where else to look. Thank You.

NYBERG, Peter J.
eMail address: nyberg@bellsouth.net

My grandfather, Frank MEHLE, born 10 September 1880 at Vodje, House #1, Slovenia. I am unable to determine from his Baptism record the exact town - was it Vodje, or was he born in Ljubljanska as tradition holds? His parents were Josip MEHLE and Marija KRALJIC. He was baptized Roman Catholic in St. Jurij (George) Parish (near Grosuplic). Josip reportedly emigrated to US, settling near Ely, Minnesota, where he worked in the mines. He was supposedly killed in a mining accident, although no record can be found. He was said to have been killed the day before his son Frank (my grandfather) arrived in Ely in 1900. I have no idea when or where Marija died. My grandfather married Mary SIMONIC in 1907 at Aurora, Minnesota. Mary was born in Ljubljanska 6 November 1882. She emigrated to US in 1904, landing at Wheeling, West Virginia. There was a flood there, and she didn't like that, so she went to Ely, Minnesota, where she had cousins (names unknown). Mary shared little about her family in Slovenia, supposedly she was an only child and lived with her mother and grandmother in Slovenia. They saved their money so that Mary could go to the US to better herself. She never returned to Slovenia after she left at age 22, so she never saw her mother or grandmother again. We have no idea the names of Mary's parents. Any information would be greatly appreciated and would be willing to share what little information I have.

PERKINS, Frances RAHONCE
eMail address: Dnfperkins@aol.com

Please add my eMail address to your mailing list. I am a member of the RAHONCE family from the Skofja Loka area. We are looking for the the brother of my grandfather, Frank RAHONC who immigrated to Rock Spring, Wyoming to work in the coal mines. This man would be the uncle to my father, Cyril RAHONCE and my aunt Christina RAHONC MEHLEe. My Dad tells me his name was changed in immigration. The person we are looking for may have moved to the Cleveland area, and the two brothers may have had some sort of misunderstanding, as there did not seem to be any contact, as far as the family knows, once they came to America. An interesting fact that my 95 year old aunt told me is that in Slovenia you did not get a middle name until you were confirmed. Neither my Dad or my aunt know what middle name they were given. If your group has any information about this brother, we would be forever grateful for the knowledge.

PETERLIN, Laurin A.
9539 Frankirst, North Hills, California 91343-1910, USA
eMail address: tebbe@pacbell.net

My brother's name is Stanley M. PETERLIN and we are the children of Stanley P. PETERLIN of Eveleth, MN. His parents were Frank PETERLIN, Sr. and Agnes (ZUPANC) PETERLIN of Eveleth. My father had four brothers: Albin, Joe, Frank, Jr. and Rudolph and a sister: Agnes. I am seeking information on these family members and their children. Please write.

PETERNEL, Bill
eMail address: wksjpete@worldnet.att.net

I am looking for information on my grandfather, Jacob PETERNEL, born 25 July 1865 in or around the Lujubljana (Laibach) area. I have reason to believe his birthplace was located to the NW of Ljubljana in Skofja Loka province and possibly within the villages of Vinharje vas or Zabia vas. His parents names were Jacob and Mary PETERNEL, and there were two siblings from this marriage; Stephan PETERNEL and Agnes (Angelina) PETERNEL. Mary died in 1872 and the elder Jacob remarried and had other children. The names of this second wife and their children are not known. The family is believed to, have been engaged in farming at Skofja Loka.

My grandfather Jacob PETERNEL left Slovenia in 1887 for the United States settling in the Johnstown and Pittsburgh, PA area for four years. He them made his way to Gallup, New Mexico where he arrived in 1892 and remained for the rest of his life. In 1897 he married Josephine SCHAUER who was born in the Gottschee German district not too far from Ljubljana, and they had nine children born in Gallup. My grandfather Jacob PETERNEL died in Gallup 9 April 1942. His brother Stephan PETERNEL supposedly went to South America about the same time as Jacob went to the United States, and Stephan PETERNEL has never been heard from since. Nor do I know what ever became of their sister Agnes {Angelina} PETERNEL. In 1900, Jacob reportedly received a visit in Gallup from a 19 year old nephew from Slovenia named Francz PETERNEL. Francz's whereabouts are also unknown. The common nature of the PETERNEL surname has made this research difficult. If anyone has any information I would appreciate hearing from you.

REPIC, Edward
eMail address: ED_REPIC@compuserve.com

My father, Michael REPIC, emigrated to America in 1920 or 19211. I am trying to find out more about his past in Slovenia. All I know is he was from a village near Trieste which was handed over to the Italians after WW 1. He left for the US because of this. He later sent for my Mother (same village) who was working in Trieste as a maid. Her Maiden name was Antonia PURKELJC (changed to PURKELI by the Italians after the take over). I am also trying to get more information on the Italian takeover. Also, I am very interested in any information on ships of that time period including passage costs, conditions etc. Please let me know where I can get more information on the above. Thanks

STONER, Donald L.
eMail address: donstone@gate.net

I have recent become interested in genealogy and am currently attempting to trace the family of my wife. I am not sure what the procedure is for working with the Slovenian Genealogy Society but I am hoping you can advise me. Like many people, I became interested after both my wife and my parents passed away. My wife's mothers maiden name was Mary Ann PRIJANOVICH. She was born 28 August 1910 in Utah. She was married at Virginia, Minnesota to Timothy Douglas HEENAN 26 April 1931. Mary Ann's parents were Mathew PRIJANOVICH and Francis SCHILTZ. At this point my records end. We believe that Mathew was born in Ljubljana.

ZELENZNIK Mari
eMail address: marichan12@hotmail.com

My mother would love to know more about her relations. Her father was (I think this is the first name) Anton ZELEZNIK. I remember his birth certificate said he was born (or it was documented at Belgrade.) He emigrated to Joliet, Illinois before World War I, with his brother, Frank. Anton married a first-generation, Slovenian girl named Frances MUHICH. I know really little about them since they both died in automobile accidents. They had five children (Joseph, Frances, Anton, Rozella (later Rose), and Elizabeth - born in 1924) As far as I know they were Catholics, although maybe my grandfather may have been Jewish (only because people keep asking me this). Thanks for any replies.

ZWIEG, Ruth

I am looking for any information on my father's family. My father is Valentine F. PLATISHA, Jr. born in 1918, son of Valentine PLATISHA, Sr. (born 14 February 1879, died 13 December 1918), born at Skofja Loka, Jugoslavia / Yugoslavia. His father was Gasper PLATISHA and mother Marija MATUNELI. Gasper emigrated to the United States 4 October 1905. First he went to Pennsylvania, then to Kansas where he worked in a coal mine until 1913. Valentine Sr.had a brother named Martin, and possible other siblings. Val Sr. married Antonija ZGONC 9 May 1909 at Scammon, Kansas. She was born in Malem Viju na Kranjskem 29 December 1892. Antonija had 3 brothers, including John and Francis, and a sister, unknown name. Val, Sr. came to Willard, Wisconsin in 1913 to look over the land and returned to Kansas. In 1914 Val and Antonija returned to Willard and lived their till their deaths. In November 1918, Val Sr. came down with the flu during the epidemic. Soon after, son Stanley and daughter Louise and Mrs. Platisha contracted it. These four died within 3 days. That left only daughter Antonia, age eight and son Valentine, age eleven months. These two were adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Anton KRAINZ, who had no children of their own. Any help or info would be appreciated.
