Surname(s): Schmidt
Region(s) Prigedau/Samburgen (Galacia)
Religion Lutheran
Seeking information about Prigedau Galacia. I've also seen the word Samburgen after Prigedau. This is the birthplace of my GG Grandfather Ludwig Schmidt who later immigrated to Bergdorf, Gluckstahl Colonies sometime after 1812. He was born in 1805. Can find nothing of his parents names for certain but Dianosus was one possibility according to a friend. Ludwig died in Bergdorf, the death information mentions Prigedau, Galacia. Does anyone have a map of what I think was the Austria-Hungarian Empire in 1805? Do you have Schmidt families from that area? Anything at all in common with your research? All assistance or comments are appreciated.

The oldest family member I can claim is Rabbi Joske Skolnik, who was killed in a blood libel in 1757, his daughter Channa. She had two sons,Leibush and Zissel, who start the Schlissel line. Starting with Pincus, 1899 they all came to USA. The other line owned flour stores in Tarnobzeg, the Eder's, Chaim Josef, Motel and father Zvi Hersch who died and was buried in Safed, Israel. Zvi was not a true Eder as he took his wife's last name. Both families inter-married alot.

NAZAR, Debra Ann: NAZVILUSA@AOL.com (email)
82 Schermerhorn Street, Suite 4B
Surname(s): Nazar, Alexander Raymond
Region(s): Sokol or Lvov
Religion: Catholic
My paternal grandfather, Alexander Raymond Nazar, arrived in the U.S. sometime between 1890 and 1900. It was arranged by his father that he was to meet a family in NYC. Upon arrival in NYC's Ellis Island, he learned that the family who was to meet him died in a fire. With the aid of a stranger, he went to Canada where he worked for approximately 5 years as a lumberjack. He was between 8 and 12 yrs. when he was sent to the U.S. He had either one or two brothers, one of which also came to the US although separately and at a later time. He also had several sisters. Allegedly, my great-grandfather was the village, or city's, burgmeister. It was because in that role he had to entertain military, government, and members of the monarch (Austrian-Hungarian) that he learned, or predicted, that WWI was imminent. Thus, he assured his favorite son was in the US before the start of WWI. We have only two letters from his family, which was written in Ukranian or Russian dialect, but I know that he also spoke German. His family was a farming family which may account for why he preferred living in the woods of Canada and ultimately in the midwest of the US. His brother may have moved west from Chicago, although he moved from Canada to Chicago, then to Toledo, Ohio where I was born. His son's name is Edwin L. Nazar and his daughter's name is Loretta Nazar. He began a variety of industrial rubber companies and was responsible for the process of rubber adhereing to metal. We have no idea as to what happened to his family who remained behind, if they were faced with perishing under Stalin or under Hitler. If you know of anything which would be helpful, please contact me.

Surname(s): Makarewicz, Bereznicki, Androhowitz
Region(s): Hliboka, Galacia
Religion: Roman Catholic
I am trying to find out infromation about my grandfather Stanley Mark born Stanislaus Makarewicz in what appears on his immigration papers as HLIBOKA, Austria. On the ships register it stated Galacia, Poland. I have narrowed this down to a town in the Ukraine along the Romanian boarder. This seems to fit for me. He was born on March 4, 1879. He worked in the oil field of Romania before coming to the US in 1902 through Baltimore. He had at least two brothers Adolf Bereznicki born in 1870 died in St. Paul, MN July 26, 1913. Adolf came into the US via Canada in May of 1895 through St. Vincent, MN. Another brother Victor Androhowitz born in the same Circa. There may have been another brother, Marian, and a sister, Adelka. Victor died on board ship on the way over. Probably buried at sea. The story is that their parents died and this is the reason for different last names. They may have been illegitamate. Their mother's name was Magdoline (No last name listed). Whatever information I can get I would appreciate.

Surname(s): HOCH
Region(s): Galicia
Religion: Jewish
I am seeking the birthplace of my father Morris Hoch. He was born June 9, 1886 somewhere in Galicia. His fathers' name was Henoch (or Heindrich) and his mothers' was Goldie Lieberman (I'm not sure of her last name). My father was the youngest of several children, whose names I do not know. The only brother, who lived in the Brooklyn, NY was Louis. My father married Jean (Evgenia)Schechter and my brother Eugene was also born in Galicia. My father, mother & brother came to the USA sometime around 1919-1920, docking at Ellis Island. Since all my relatives (father, mother, brother & uncle) have passed on, I have no one to ask. I seem to recall some conversations that mentioned letters from relatives living in Canada & Argentina, but I have no specific information with this regard. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I too am aging & would like to leave some history to my daughter & grandchildren. Thanking you in advance, I am Gloria Hoch Weber

Surname(s): Stojanowski, Dawiskiba, Nebazenko
Region(s): Mlyniska/Kobylowloki/Janow (Galicia)
Religion: Catholic
I am seeking information about the above names & places. My grandfather Michael Stojanowski -son of John Stojanowski & Constansia Dawiskiba- was born in Mlyniska in 1885. His paternal grandparents, Thomas Stojanowski & Frances Nebazenko, lived at Kobylowloki. Both Mlyniska & Kobylowloki must be very small places because I haven't been able to find them on any map. Due to this area now being in the former USSR, obtaining information is costly & difficult, if not impossible. Does anyone tie in with these people or places? Does anyone have suggestions re my obtaining more information about these people & places?

Surname(s): Bezkorowaynyj (Beskorowany)
Region(s) Galicia
I am seeking information on the name Bezkorowaynyj (Beskorowany). Stefan and Sofia (Demchuk) and 4 children - Michael, Nicholas, Demka(Dan), and Marya left from somewhere in Galicia and sailed from Liverpool Eng. on the SS Lake Manitoba Apr.24, 1902 to Quebec City, Canada. From there they took a train to Manitoba, and settled north of Winnipeg, on a farm near a town first called KreuzBurg and later renamed Fraserwood. Sofia Demchuk's sister, Nastia (Nettie) and her husband Nickola Pendziwol and their family travelled with them and settled near them. I am trying to find out from where in Galicia these people (My grandparents) came from. There was a group of people came earlier from Kopychentsi, and some of the names listed as being from Kopychentsi are on the passenger list of the ship that Stefan and Sofia were on. However, the passenger list only lists their place of origin as "Galicia". We have also been told that Bezkorowaynyj (meaning "without wedding bread") is a Cossack name. Apparently serfs that ran away from the landlords in Poland and Galicia and anywhere else to join the Cossacks had to be baptized again by the Cossacks, and the Cossacks gave them new names so they could not be traced. Most of the names had odd meanings, another being "Skoropat", meaning "Fall Fast". Has anyone else found this to be true in their family searches?

Her father, Michael, had come to the USA in 1903 but apparently returned to Krasiczyn about 1911.
