Suggestions for more effective
Research List Messages
on FEEFHS Research Lists
Latest Update: 7 October 2000
................................... FEEFHS Web Site
Version
The eMail coordinator for these lists is that ... and only that.
These coordinators basically cannot help you with your research
nor does FEEFHS have any resources for assistance beyond its free
website and the contents of our FEEFHS Journal
The idea for this type of online post is for you to submit in one
message a detailed query in order to have a much better
opportunity for others to find you and be of assistance to you.
Using ths Research List (RL), in conjunction with the FEEFHS
Website Index and most major WWW Web Search Engines that index
aall our RL's), you are taking advantage of a numbers game and it
is a case of "the more you sow, the more you reap."
In other words, the more full names, places and vital details you
can offer, the more contacts you will get in return. The
difference between a FEEFHS Research List entry and a printed
query in some other genealogical publication is that we make
enough space available for you to set up the background for a
significant genealogical question to be posted and answered.
Be sure to
- Capitalize ALL SURNAMES (not given names), whether in
the title or in the body of the message being posted.
- Do NOT capitalize anything else please.
- Avoid abbreviations at all costs (spell it out) ... not
everyone uses the same ones or speaks the same language, and this
website is seen in well over 100 countries on 7 continents.
Abreviations can present problems for other researchers,
essspecuially those whose promary language is not English.
- State your problem clearly and succinctly.
- Avoid cryptic messages - use precise words and statements
that clarify what you are seeking, asking for or explaining.
- Include all relevent data: surnames, places and important
dates of your search.
- Include the probable or actual religion of each line -
important for locating church or synagogue records.
- List every place name (locality) that is important to your
search if you know them.
- Include all surnames you are searching or have information
on to share with others.
- Avoid forms and tables - we will not post them. Use one
line of text per person is mucch preferred.
- REMEMBER, All unique words of your message are indexed by
our web index (search engine) and most WWW Search engines.
- Provide a mailing address if you do not have an eMail
address.
- Consider posting both your eMail address and your postal
address.
- Review your message every 6 to 12 months; then revise,
extend and refine it.
- Do NOT copy the FEEFHS webmaster - he already gets hundreds
of eMails a day ... the reason for the eMail coordinators is the
vet you message and forward them in batchs for monthy postings.
Only eMail queries received from the eMail coordinator will be
posted.
- Advise the eMail coordinator if or when your eMail address
or postal address changes.
- Encourage other record searchers you encounter to post on a
FEEFHS Research List, too.
