Gary Horlacher has a Ph.D. from BYU in family science (2005) and a masters in linguistics (1993). He started genealogy in 1978 and started doing professional genealogical research in 1989, specializing in German, Scandinavian, and Dutch research. He became accredited in Danish (1990), Swedish (1990), German (1991), and Norwegian (1998) research. From 1997-2001 he worked as a research consultant for the Family History Library helping with European research and overseeing the Danish collection.

After going back to school and doing Post-Doctoral research at USC (2006-2009), he returned to Utah and began working as for Ancestry Pro-Genealogists in 2012. He is currently working on the Eastern European-Jewish research team at Ancestry and does a lot of Czech and Dutch research projects. He translates genealogical records in 12 languages. He has presented at conferences and published a number of family history books.
