The Ahnenstammkartei Vorwort states that these conversions are needed for high German surnames, but Low German Names should be left in there original form.
Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes - R-S
Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes (1,238 microfilm reels) is the largest collection of ethnic German genealogies extant. The original collection is at the Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie in Leipzig Germany and should be used there by anyone able to visit it. It was placed on FHL microfilm and thus any reel is now available for use at the Family History Centers worldwide.
