Background Information

When the record books of the St. John's Lutheran Church of Champaign were microfilmed by the Champaign County Historical Archives several years ago (Roll #20), an unexpected bonus was the discovery that among the St. John's books were also the record books of the old Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Hensley Township.

The Sacramento German Genealogy Society publication Der Blumenbaum reported in 1997 that the New York Herald in 1917 published a list, in book form, of more than 28,000 "German enemy aliens". These apparently were compiled from a "NY City military census" and gave only name and street address.
