This following research was possible thanks to Kathy Kirkpatrick who took a photo in the Cosenza Town Cemetery, in Calabria region, in Southern Italy. She wished to know more about the fate of those forgotten soldiers and she sent the picture to Matteo D’Angella, who researches on the Austrian Hungarian prisoners who died in the South-Western area of Italian mainland. The author noted that among the following names several were misspelled or Italianized (Michele, Vincenzo). Furthermore, interesting is that the dead are considered “glorious” on the memorial and often it was common the pity and respect towards the dead but after the First World War many remains were transferred to town ossuaries and got lost or simply disappeared when towns grown out their boundaries and old cemeteries were disbanded. The cause of death was often caused by hunger and Spanish flu because the Austrian- Hungarian Empire was falling and the lack of food and clothing in the homeland did not allow a proper help to the inmates abroad, who died, for this reason. In Cosenza are buried forty eight prisoners who died but other few names found in the Death Registers were not reported on the Cemetery Memorial. They were mainly Ukrainian Galicians and Hungarians and the information provided show surname, name, birthplace, birth date and date of death and when possible, the Infantry Regiment they belonged to and the parents names. This article is dedicated to their memory.
